Simple solutions to help calm the chaos of motherhood

How to Organize Legos

Is it even possible to organize Legos?

And keep them organized?

I think the answer is, “Sort of!”

They’ll never be 100% organized- not if you want your kids to actually, you know, play with them! But we are making an effort over here, with the creation of Lego World:

Update: This post shows how to keep Legos organized by set. I’ve also written an article about organizing Legos for creative play. You can see that one here!

How to organize Legos: This is how we keep our Legos organized: Lego storage ideas include a basket and pouches for sets, a lego table, bins for building in progress, shelves for completed sets, and color coded buckets in a cubby organizer. #legostorage #legoorganization

When we set out to organize our daughters’ Legos in this corner of our basement, we started by figuring out our goals for this space.

Right now, our kids are really into completing Lego sets, and playing with the sets once they’re done.

They don’t usually build their own creations yet. (The creativity really happens after they build a set, and how they play with it!) So our design definitely reflects that.

Our 4 goals for this space were:

  1. We wanted a place to store completed sets up high (away from our toddler’s grabby little hands!)
  2. A table where the girls could sit and build whatever set they’re currently working on. (Bonus points if there was storage within the table so the aforementioned toddler couldn’t “help” in between building sessions.)
  3. We had to create a system to keep all the pieces in our un-built sets together and organized.
  4. We also wanted to design a color-coded system for storing extra pieces.

Storing already-built Lego sets

We started by installing 2 shelves where the girls could store their creations up above Andrew’s reach.

They can easily get down a set that they want to play with from this height.

Lego Instructions

I included a basket to hold the instructions. This one is roomy enough to hold a wide variety of sizes, which is perfect.

Storing new (unbuilt) Lego sets

A few months ago, we bought 14 used Lego Friends sets on Facebook Marketplace for next to nothing.

And then we quickly realized that we needed a really great way to organize them, or they were going to become a huge mess.

I ended up buying a bunch of these clear plastic bags on Amazon, and putting each set, along with its instructions, one to a bag.

I tossed all the bags into this roomy basket, where the girls can pick out one set at a time to work on.

We also ended up taking apart some of the older sets that we had, and putting them back into bags so that the girls could put them together again. Honestly, I don’t event think they remembered doing them the first time, so it was basically like I bought them brand new Legos. 😉

The Lego table

Next on our list was to find a Lego table where the girls could sit and work on their sets.

We love this one because it has storage bins where we can keep the pieces that the girls are currently building with. We already had 2 kids chairs from Ikea that turned out to be the perfect height for the table, too.

It’s not pictured here, but the top of this table can be removed, and there is even more storage underneath.

Lego storage – by color

In addition to the extra Lego pieces which are stored under the table, we wanted an area where we could sort smaller and unique pieces by color.

This makes it easier to find pieces when you’re looking for something specific.

Here’s what we came up with:

Each pail holds a different color.

And we left space at the bottom for Lego people.

That’s it!

Hopefully I gave you some good ideas for your own Lego organization project. Good luck, and thanks for reading!
