Each weekday morning, I spend 30-45 minutes doing a little preschool-at-home routine with my 2 and 5 year olds.
It’s nothing too complicated, but we do choose a different theme each week to keep things interesting. This week was all about snow, and we had so much fun that I just had to share what we did with you!
Each day, we do 4 things during our home preschool time:
- Sing a song
- Read a story
- Do a craft
- Do an extra activity (usually a movement or play-based activity)

Planning for the week
Before we jump into it, here are 2 important things for you to do before you start your snow preschool theme.
- Browse the supply list. Make note of anything you want to use that you don’t already have at home. Add them to your shopping list or buy them on Amazon now.
- Check out 5 snow books from the library. These can be any snow-themed books. I included 5 suggestions on the planning sheet. If you want to see more options, we recently read and reviewed a whole bunch of snow picture books for various age ranges:
Preschool Planner
Be sure to check out the preschool planner I’ve created for moms like you to plan fun preschool-at-home activities with your kids! It’s available as a digital file or a spiral bound planner, and they are both filled with tons of helpful checklists, guides, and planning pages:

Songs
Each day we start our preschool time with a song that we can move and dance around to. This time, I found five fantastic songs, all from the same person- one of our absolute favorites- Miss Nina!

Stories
Here are the picture books that we read during our preschool snow week. There are so many good books here!

A Loud Winter’s Nap (Fiction Picture… | $10.36 | Buy on Amazon |
We are huge fans of Katy Hudson. And this book is no exception. The story is full of funny details, and the pictures are, too. And the animal characters, as always, are absolutely lovable.
Snowmen at Night, by Caralyn Buehner

Snowmen at Night | $9.23 | Buy on Amazon |
When a little boy notices that his snowman looks a little different the next morning (a little droopy, with his hat askew) he imagines all of the fun things his snowman must have been doing during the night in order to end up like that. We like the snowman baseball game that turns into a giant snowball fight!
The Thing About Yetis, by Vin Vogel

The Thing About Yetis | $15.79 | Buy on Amazon |
After I finished explaining to my kids what yetis are (and whether they are real or not) we had a great time reading this goofy, lighthearted book about what happens when yetis get tired of the long, cold winter.

Got to Get to Bear’s! | $9.99 | Buy on Amazon |
This book is adorable. The illustrations are detailed, colorful, and fun. The animal’s names are silly and always make my kids giggle. And the story is sweet.
The Mitten, by Jan Brett

The Mitten | $11.51 | Buy on Amazon |
We adore this classic story about a boy who loses his mitten in the snow, and all of the animals who crowd inside to stay warm.
The illustrations are full of fun details about what’s coming up in the story. We loved this one so much that we even made popsicle stick puppets of all the animas so that the kids could retell the story over and over.
Crafts
Here are the snow crafts that we enjoyed this week:
Snowflakes with marshmallows and toothpicks
On this website, you’ll find all kinds of great ideas for building different types of snowflakes out of marshmallows and toothpicks. But, honestly, I just gave my kids the supplies and they had a blast exploring and creating on their own. 🙂
Build your own snowman
Kids can color, cut, and glue together their own snowmen. I cut out the pieces for my 2 year old, and let him glue them however he wanted to. So many great skills are practiced with this one activity.
Snow window
This is such a fun, open-ended activity. I just used contact paper and Q-tips, and my kids kept coming back to it and working on it all week.
Magic salt and watercolor snowflake art
This was our favorite craft from the week. These mini snowflake artworks were so fun to make, and they turned out really vibrant and beautiful. (We used white oil pastels and regular watercolors, since that’s what we had, and it worked perfectly.)
Hand print mitten craft
My kids had so much fun decorating their mittens with pom poms. We skipped the glitter. 😉
Activities
After our daily craft, we like to do some kind of play or movement-based activity. Here’s what we did:
Paper plate ice skating
So simple, but so much fun! I don’t know why I’ve never thought of this before.
2 ingredient fake snow
This fake snow was so easy to make. The kids enjoyed mixing it up. Anything messy is automatically more exiting to them, and I have to admit… this was a little messy. It smelled amazing, though!
Winter forest scavenger hunt
This was a huge win because it got us out of the house on a very cold winter day. At least for long enough to take a walk around our property and search for the items on our list. I love that the pictures are included as well, so my kids could really take control of the scavenger hunt and do it themselves.
Popping Snow
Another super simple, but fun activity for kids to explore.
Put on a puppet show with these story sequencing cards
This was probably our favorite from all our play activities this week. I printed out these cards, and my kids glued popsicle sticks to the back of them to turn them into puppets. They absolutely loved using the puppets to reenact the story of The Mitten, and put on so many puppet shows for us over the next week or two!
Well, that’s it for our snow unit. We had so much fun doing this one. I hope you have as much fun as we did learning all about snow. Thanks for reading!
-Laura
P.S. Our next winter unit is going to be all about penguins. Stay tuned!
