How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin? by Margaret McNamara
This story is a great one! It is a little longer, and deals with counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s, so it’s better for older preschoolers. My 4 year old loved it, but my 2 year old lost interest about halfway through.
Pumpkin Circle, by George Levenson
This book is a good combination of informative, but not overwhelming. Each page has just a few rhyming lines on it, and tons of great photos of pumpkin plants and parts.

Seed, Sprout, Pumpkin, Pie by Jill Esbaum
This book is full of interesting pumpkin photos and facts about how pumpkins can be used. It is the perfect length to hold a young child’s attention.
The Biggest Pumpkin Ever, by Steven Kroll
A wonderful story about what happens to two mice who both start taking care of the same gigantic pumpkin- without either knowing about the other mouse. It’s a little longer, but such a great story!
Pete the Cat Five Little Pumpkins, by James Dean
This is a great one if your little one is already a fan of Pete the Cat- which we are!
Pumpkin Jack, by Will Hubbell
This is my personal favorite pumpkin book, and my kids love it too. It’s all about a boy who carves a pumpkin, which then starts to rot.
It’s Pumpkin Day, Mouse! by Laura Numeroff
This book goes along with Laura Numberoff’s If you give a… series. The little mouse is as cute and likable as ever.
Little Boo, by Stephen Wunderli
This is a great story about a little pumpkin seed who wants to be scary, but has to wait a long, long time.
Pumpkin Soup, by Helen Cooper
This is my four year old’s favorite fall book. She would listen to this story over and over. The characters- a group of animals- are funny and likable.
How Big Could your Pumpkin Grow? by Wendell Minor
The pictures in this book are super fun, and kids like to think about all the different, funny ways that you could use a giant pumpkin.
Pick a Pumpkin, by Patricia Toht
This is a great book about a family who carves a pumpkin together. It would be perfect to read right before you carve your own Jack-o-Lanterns.
Pumpkin Trouble, by Jan Thomas
This is a goofy, cartoon-ish book that younger ones will love!
Splat the Cat and the Pumpkin-Picking Plan, by Rob Scotton
If your kids are fans of Splat the Cat, they’ll love this fall book.
The Runaway Pumpkin, by Kevin Lewis
This is such a fun story with great pictures and a repetitive chorus throughout.
Big Pumpkin, by Erica Silverman
This is a funny story about a witch who can’t pick her giant pumpkin, and enlists the help of a whole group of spooky characters. (Some of the pictures might be a little scary if your kids are very sensitive.)
The Berenstain Bears and the Prize Pumpkin, by Stan and Jan Berenstain
We love the Berenstain Bears around here, so of course we enjoy this story about Papa Bear’s beloved prize pumpkin. This one, like most Berenstain Bear books, is a little on the longer side, so it would probably work best with older preschoolers.
Penguin and Pumpkin, by Salina Yoon
This was such a cute story about a group of penguins who set off to see what Fall is like.
Pumpkin Hill, by Elizabeth Spurr
I think this story is hilarious, so I mostly just read it aloud for my own entertainment. But the kids do like it, too. 🙂
