I love a good snowstorm. I think it’s the former teacher in me that still gets excited about the prospect of a snow day.
And what better way to celebrate the falling snow than by cozying up with your kids on the couch with some hot chocolate and a good snow story?
I recently did a whole preschool unit with my kids on snow, and we read a TON of snow picture books. Today I’m sharing our favorites.

Alright, let’s get to the snow books. 😉
The best picture books about snow (18 of our favorites)
Bunny Slopes, by Claudia Rueda
Age: 3-5 years
This in an interactive book: Kids get to shake the book in order to make it snow, tilt the book to help the bunny ski down the slope, etc. I have already read this one many times this winter. It’s a huge favorite for us!
Got to Get to Bear’s! by Brian Lies
Age: 4-7 years
This book is adorable. The illustrations are detailed, colorful, and fun. The animal’s names are silly and always make my kids giggle. And the story is sweet.
Little Mole’s Wish, by Sang-Keun Kim
Age: 3-7 years
This is a book about a little mole who wants to take his snowball friend home with him, but the bus drivers say he can’t bring a snowball on the bus. So he keeps reshaping it to look more and more lifelike. My kids enjoy this one.
A Loud Winter’s Nap, by Katy Hudson
Age: 3-5 years
We are huge fans of Katy Hudson. And this book is no exception. The story is full of funny details, and the pictures are, too. And the animal characters, as always, are absolutely lovable.
The Mitten, by Jan Brett
Age: 3-5 years
I think that even older kids would enjoy this classic story about a boy who loses his mitten in the snow, and all of the animals who crowd inside to stay warm.
The illustrations are full of fun details about what’s coming up in the story. We loved this one so much that we even made popsicle stick puppets of all the animas so that the kids could retell the story over and over.
The Hat, by Jan Brett
Age: 4-8 years
If you like The Mitten, you will love this one as well. Hedgie the Hedgehog has found a stocking, and is wearing it around the farm like a hat! My kids and I really enjoyed the surprise ending.
Red Sled, by Lita Judge
Age: 2-8 years
This book only has one or two words per page, so the illustrations tell the story. We had so much fun talking about what was happening on each page as a group of very silly animals check out a sled for the first time.
The Thing About Yetis, by Vin Vogel
Age: 3-5 years
After I finished explaining to my kids what yetis are (and whether they are real or not) we had a great time reading this goofy, lighthearted book about what happens when yetis get tired of the long, cold winter.
The Snowy Nap, by Jan Brett
Age: 4-8 years
Another book by Jan Brett- they’re just so good! This is the tale of a little hedgehog named Hedgie who doesn’t want to miss out on winter just because he’s supposed to hibernate. The illustrations are wonderful, and the story is so sweet.
Snowmen at Night, by Caralyn Buehner
Age: 3-7 years
When a little boy notices that his snowman looks a little different the next morning (a little droopy, with his hat askew) he imagines all of the fun things his snowman must have been doing during the night in order to end up like that. We like the snowman baseball game that turns into a giant snowball fight!
Sneezy the Snowman, by Maureen Wright
Age: 3-7 years
Sneezy has a problem: He likes to drink hot chocolate, soak in the hot tub, and cozy up next to the fire. All of these things cause him to keep melting, and the poor kids have to build him over and over. My kids like the repetition in this book, and will often “read” it along with me.
The Missing Mitten Mystery, by Steven Kellogg
Age: 4-8 years
My 5 year old’s review of this book: “I like that story. It has silly details.” She’s right. The little girl in the story, Annie, who loses her mitten, has an active imagination. She comes up with all kinds of silly ideas about where it might be. The illustrations are wonderful as well.
Snowman Magic, by Katherine Tegen
Age: 4-8 years
As you might be able to guess, this is a story about a boy’s snowman who comes to life. It’s a simple story, told well, and with a great ending. My kids pick it over and over.
Owl Moon, by Jane Yolen
Age: 3-7 years
I can remember asking to have this story read to me when I was a little girl, so it’s fun for me to read it now to my own kids. It’s a very calming book: not too many words, and peaceful pictures. I’m happy that my kids love it as much as I did.
The Three Snow Bears, by Jan Brett
Age: 4-8 years
This is the snowy version of Goldilocks and the 3 bears. The illustrations are full of fun details, as Aloo-Ki explores a strange igloo and the polar bears save her sled dogs from floating away to sea!
The Itsy Bitsy Snowman, by Jeffrey Burton
Board book, Age: 2-4 years
Board book: Age 2-4 years
This has been a favorite book of Andrew’s since he was a baby. You can sing the whole story to the tune of the Itsy Bitsy Spider, which he loves!
Snowflake Bentley, by Jacqueline Briggs Martin
Age: 4-7 years
This is such a fascinating story about the man who dedicated his life to photographing and studying snowflakes.
It was a bit lengthy, and I thought that my 5 year old would find it a little boring, but she listened the whole way through and couldn’t stop talking about it afterwards!
The Little Snowplow, by Lora Koehler
Age: 3-7 years
This story is about a tiny little snowplow who works hard to get ready for the next big snow. But compared to all of the other trucks, he’s so little that he doesn’t know if he’ll be able to do it. My son loves trucks and vehicles, so this one is a favorite of his.
Well, those are all of our favorites… for now. Were some of your favorites on this list? Did I miss any that your family loves? Be sure to let me know in the comments!
