Listening to audiobooks and music is one of our favorite quiet time activities, for both my kindergartener, and my preschooler.
We set up this listening station in one corner of our playroom, and they use it probably every day.

What we keep in our listening station
A CD player
Call us old-fashioned, but our kids use a CD player to listen to their audiobooks!
This is the easiest option for us: the kids don’t need us to help them like they sometimes do with the iPad, and our local library has tons of audio CD books to check out, which makes it super easy.
You could easily set up your listening station with an iPad or mp3 player, though, if you wanted to.
Books on CD
We regularly check out audiobooks on CD from our library. Emma, our kindergartener, will listen to chapter books while she plays. (Her favorites are The Magic Tree House and the Fudge series.)
Our preschooler likes the CDs that come with picture books where you can follow along. (She’s a big fan of everything Disney!)
We’ve also recorded ourselves reading a number of books out loud, which the kids can play while they read along.
(You can find out more about that in this post, on our original listening library.)
Headphones and a CD case
The next basket in our listening center holds headphones and a CD case. The kids really like to listen to our old music CDs, so we have a few in there, along with several kids music CDs. (Our favorite is Slugs and Bugs!)
The CD case also holds some of the audio book CDs, when they’re not able to be stored inside the book covers.
Musical instruments, scarves, and shaker eggs
The last basket holds dancing scarves, instruments, shaker eggs, etc. for dancing!
This basket is a favorite of my one year old. You can see all of our favorite movement songs for toddlers here.
That’s it!
All that’s left is to check out some great audiobooks from your library, and your kids will have a great quiet time activity that they can do all my themselves. 🙂
What do you think?
Hopefully I’ve given you at least a few ideas that you can use in your own home listening station.
Enjoy!
