As a mom of 4 kids, I’m here to share the secret about how to organize legos for kids.

The secret? It all depends on how your kids play with their legos.
Let me explain:
Our kids used to love doing lego sets. They would build a set, take it apart, and build the same set all over again.
So we developed an system to keep their sets together, with the instructions, in bags, and to keep track of missing pieces by color so they could easily be found and identified.
(You can see what that whole system looked like here.)
But that all changed. Our kids got a little older. They wanted to play with legos more creatively, and come up with their own builds. So we switched gears and reorganized.
Here’s how we keep our legos organized now:

I’ll start with our supply list, since that’s what everyone is most interested in. ๐ Then I’ll show you how you can copy our system to organize your own legos!

How to organize legos for kids
OK, let’s get to it. Here’s the system we created and how you can copy it:
A big bin or tub
I think it’s important to remember that your legos will never be 100% organized. Not if your kids actually play with them, that is!

And when it comes to creative play, a big basket or bin of some kind is really helpful, so kids can dig through and find pieces.
Organize by type
If your kids are building creatively, it’s not super helpful to organize pieces by color. Instead, we used small drawers to separate out “favorite” pieces: the fun pieces that our kids will use over and over, but might get lost at the bottom of the big tub.

These are the things that my kids love to look through, and will inspire them to create!

I used my Cricut Joy to label this rolling cart of drawers with both names and pictures. Here are the categories we used:
- Tiny pieces
- People
- Animals
- Windows & doors
- Vehicles (tires, windshields, etc.)
- Nature
- Small accessories
- Large accessories
- Half-built
- Bases
An inspiration board
I found a pegboard and a few pegboard accessories for the wall beside our lego table to hold all of our lego instructions, magazines, and books.

My kids love to look at these over and over, and often get ideas that they want to try. So I decided to display them right next to the lego table. I also found a few pictures of my kids playing with legos from years ago, and thought it would be fun to put those up as well.
A place to keep projects

We also put up two shelves above our lego table, so that kids could keep projects that they completed, or that they were still working on, up and out of their workspace.
