My 2 year old loves trucks. Especially construction trucks.
So when we moved him out of his nursery and into his big boy bedroom, we decided to create a construction themed toddler room.
Nothing too crazy, because I know he won’t be in this phase forever. Just a few little touches here and there that will be easy to trade out when his next obsession comes along.

Changing table/dresser
Andrew just turned 2, and he still is very much wearing diapers. So we kept the dresser from his nursery, and continue to use it as a changing table in his new room.
I found these cute truck prints here, and put them into these chunky white frames that I found at IKEA.
This cute basket also came from Andrew’s nursery, and we use it to store diapers, wipes, and hand sanitizer. (I also filled one of his dresser drawers with diapers for easy refills.)
Toy rotation
Around the corner from the dresser, I added this storage unit, which holds 4 different toy collections.
Right now, he can choose to play with farm animals, big trucks, matchbox cars, or magna tiles. I switch out these toys often to keep him interested. (You can read all about how I rotate toys here.)
And I thought it would be fun to add some big trucks to his room, but these are really outdoor toys. (Can you tell by how dirty they are? Oops!) and they have recently been moved back outside. Where they should have been all along. Ha!
Books
Next to the toy bins is our giant bookcase.
Side note: We secured this, along with the other furniture in the room, to the wall. You can never be too careful!
This bookshelf actually holds all of the kids’ books, which is why you see some chapter books higher up. Inside the lower cabinets are board books that Andrew can easily reach himself.
And these colorful bins have been perfect for keeping our sets together. I labeled them with pictures so that even the little kids can put books back in the right spot.
Futon
This room was originally a guest room/playroom, and we decided to keep the futon in here for now. It has been suuuuper convenient, as we’ve transitioned into the new big boy bed. Lying on a futon is about a million times more comfortable than lying on the floor as you try to calm a crying toddler. Haha!
It’s also just a nice place to sit and relax with my coffee while Andrew plays with his toys, or snuggle up for a story before nap time.
Bed
And finally, the toddler bed. We have this construction truck bedding set, and it is so stinkin cute.
Construction truck book wall
Above Andrew’s bed, we installed these picture ledges from IKEA, and filled them with all of Andrew’s favorite construction books.
I lied about being “done”
Since I wrote this post, and “officially” declared the room to be done… I decided to add a few more finishing touches. Like a little Montessori inspired entryway (or “getting ready”) station right by the door. I wrote a whole post about that project, which you can check out here.

Gift ideas for kids that they will actually use all year long
