The Organized Mom Life

The Organized Mom Life

Simple organization for busy moms

Cloth diaper baby registry

So you’re going to go for it: You’re going to ditch the disposables and use cloth diapers for your next (or first!) baby.

Good for you! As a mom who’s done it for two babies now, I can say that it is very doable. You’ve got this, mama. It will definitely be worth it. 😉

But you will need some supplies. So here are the items that I recommend adding to your baby registry if you are planning to use cloth diapers.

But first…

Before we get started, I do recommend an Amazon baby registry if you’re planning to add a bunch of cloth diapering essentials. Here are a few helpful links before you get started if you haven’t done that yet:

What to add to your baby registry if you’re using cloth diapers

Well, first you’ll want to add some cloth diapers- of course! 😉

You will want to do some research into the type of cloth diapers you’ll use, but here are the 2 basic types you’ll be choosing between:

Cloth diaper #1- Diaper covers

Sigzagor Baby Cloth Diaper Cover Nappy... Sigzagor Baby Cloth Diaper Cover Nappy… $8.59Amazon Prime Buy on Amazon

This is just a diaper cover- or the outside of a cloth diaper. That means you’ll still have to buy “pre-folds” or the cloth that goes inside. The positive is that you can reuse the cover throughout the day, and just replace the cloth inside. These are generally more cost-effective than the all-in-ones.

Prefolds (if you are using diaper covers)

This is the “prefold” or the cloth that you will fold and put inside of the diaper cover should you choose to go with that option.

Snappi cloth diaper fasteners (if you are using diaper covers)

If you choose to use the diaper covers with the prefolds, these will fasten the prefold together. (They replace diaper pins.)

Cloth diaper #2- Pocket diapers

ALVABABY Baby Cloth Diaper 6 Pack with... ALVABABY Baby Cloth Diaper 6 Pack with… $29.89Amazon Prime Buy on Amazon

This is a pocket diaper- my favorite kind. It comes with an “insert,” or a piece of cloth that can be tucked inside the pocket that’s on the inside. When it’s used, you’ll throw the whole thing in the laundry, but the good thing is that you can decide what type of insert to use. You can even stuff 2 inserts in for extra absorbency if needed, like overnight.

Bamboo inserts (if you are using pocket diapers)

If you choose pocket diapers, they will come with basic inserts. You can register for extra bamboo inserts, like these, to add at nighttime. They’ll make the diaper thicker, but they’re super-absorbent, so your baby can stay dry all night.

P.S. Hemp is another great material to try for inserts. My hemp inserts are also very absorbent, but a little thinner so I can use them during the day.

Diaper cream

When you’re using cloth diapers, you can only use certain types of diaper cream. (You don’t want to accidentally make your diapers less absorbent!) This one is safe.

Cloth wipes

To use cloth wipes, just keep a squirt bottle or a wipe warmer full of wipe solution nearby to wet them.

Diaper pail

Diaper Dekor Plus Hands-Free Diaper Pail... Diaper Dekor Plus Hands-Free Diaper Pail… $109.98 Buy on Amazon

Just because I use cloth diapers doesn’t mean I want a smelly baby room! This diaper pail works well with cloth diapers. The opening is large enough for them to fit, and it does a good job of containing the smell.

Diaper pail liners

These are large, waterproof bags that fit into the Diaper Dekor (above.) You can throw the bag into the laundry along with the diapers when you wash a load.

Small wet/dry bags

It’s smart to register for a few smaller, waterproof bags to use when you go out. These can hold about 4 dirty diapers each. I empty them straight into the washing machine. They’re washable!

Diaper sprayer

SmarterFresh Easy-Install Cloth Diaper... SmarterFresh Easy-Install Cloth Diaper… Buy on Amazon

I don’t use a diaper sprayer, but a lot of people use them to clean off poopy diapers into the toilet. Before a baby starts eating solids, their poop can go straight into the laundry, but afterwards you’ll want to throw it in the toilet.

Diaper liner inserts

LA PETITE OURSE Cloth Diaper Liners,... LA PETITE OURSE Cloth Diaper Liners,… $25.00Amazon Prime Buy on Amazon

This is what I use instead of a diaper sprayer. They’re very thin, disposable liners that I put on top of each diaper. If you’re dealing with poop, it’s really easy to throw it right into the trash without touching anything or getting it in your washing machine.

Laundry detergent

Rockin' Green Classic Rock Laundry... Rockin’ Green Classic Rock Laundry… $22.99Amazon Prime Buy on Amazon

You might need to experiment a little bit with cloth diaper-safe laundry detergents. I found that good old powdered Tide does the trick for me, but it depends on your machine and how hard or soft your water is. Consider adding one or two detergents to your registry so you can try them out yourself.

That’s it!

With these essentials, you should be all set for a successful cloth diapering experience. Good luck!
