A few days ago, my 3 year old and I created a cardboard box car track.
It was a huge hit, and was played with for many happy afternoons.
When I posted about it on Instagram, a bunch of people wanted all the details about how we made it and how they could make their own… so here they are!
How to make your own cardboard box car track
Step 1: Find a big cardboard box
Then cut it apart so that it can lay flat.
Step 2: Grab your markers and start drawing
My kids and I spent a whole morning drawing roads, parking lots, drive-thrus, and everything else we could think of all over this huge piece of cardboard.
Scroll down to see a specific list of everything that we included!
Step 3: Add the cars
We made our track the right size for matchbox/Hot Wheels cars. But we also added some of our toy construction vehicles.
Ideas: What to include on your track
Here are some close-up pictures of the different parts of the track so that you can make your own:
I didn’t take pictures until after it had been well-used and played with by my kids, so you’ll see some scribbles here. ☺️
But here is the idea list of things we included:
- Fire & rescue station
- School (with car rider loop and bus parking)
- A parking lot for a toy and book store
- Church
- Walmart grocery pick-up
- Zoo
- McDonald’s drive-thru
- Gas station
- Oil change
- Mechanic
- Ice cream shop
- ATM
- Carwash
- Drive-in movie theater with snack shop
- Construction zone
- Starbucks drive-thru
- Car dealership
We had so much fun playing with this, and I hope you do too! Enjoy. 🙂
