This baseball smash cake turned out so fun. Here are a few of the pictures we took of our one year old’s first birthday cake:
We decided to have a Rookie’s first year baseball-themed first birthday party for Andrew. And since the cake smash is my favorite part of any birthday party, I started planning a fun baseball cake smash right away!

The baseball cake
The first thing I needed was a baseball cake. Some people go to a bakery and get an adorable cake made. If that’s you: awesome.
I’m more of a $5 cake from the grocery story kind of girl. (Because- let’s be honest- no one is really going to be eating this cake!)
I did get some red icing and decorated the cake to look like a baseball. And I made a little cake banner for the top. It was cute.
The set up
We did the cake smash at the baseball field in our local park, so I didn’t need to add a whole bunch of decorations. Here is what we did use:
- This high chair banner (I just took it off his high chair when we headed to the park, and put it back on again afterwards.)
- An old baseball, glove, and bat of my husband’s
- A wooden crate
- A glass cake stand
- This shirt, which I did have custom-made for Andrew, because it was just too stinkin cute!
The cake smash
Andrew was pretty happy… at first! But he also wasn’t too interested in smashing the cake.
His older sisters decided to intervene and show him how it should go:
And then, all of a sudden, it was just too much.
I think this is my favorite picture of the whole shoot:
Poor little guy! And yet, I can see this one coming out again at his graduation, his wedding, when his kids are turning one… it’s just too funny.
Oh, and by the way, our little guy stopped crying and was all smiles again as soon as we put the lid back on the cake.
Thanks for reading!
I hope that your baseball cake smash is one to remember. Have fun, and enjoy your celebration!
