My kids love to dress up! But the dress up clothes always seemed to turn into a tangled mess on the floor.
So my husband and I decided to create a dress up station for the kids inside of a regular closet in their playroom.
We’ve been using this system for a little over a year, and it’s been great. Take a look!

Building the dress up station
All we did to create this station was to stand a 3 cube organizer up vertically inside the closet. Then we added a piece of white shelving to the top and bottom, and a closet rod to hang clothing on the side.
(Scroll down to see the supply list of everything we used.)
This allowed us to hang most of the dress up clothes on kid-sized hangers. Which, coincidentally, has been great practice for them on how to hang up real clothes! #lifeskills
Dress up shoes
A little basket, tucked inside the closet, is the perfect place to store all of our dress up shoes:
Inside the bins
I labeled each bin with a picture of what goes inside of it, since my youngest daughter can’t read yet. Here’s what we keep in each one:
Where we get our dress up clothes
Here are our favorite places to get dress up clothes:
Hand-me-downs: A lot of the clothes in our dress up station are actually hand-me-downs from friends or relatives. Things like tap shoes, ballet shoes, and gymnastics or dance costumes make perfect dress up clothes.
Halloween costumes: Every year after Halloween, I just add our costumes in to the mix. No reason those costumes can only be worn once!
Consignment sales or thrift stores: If you visit a consignment sale or thrift store in the Fall, chances are they’ll have a Halloween costume section. We like to stock up on Disney princess dresses.
Fancy events: After my daughter was a flower girl in a wedding, a wise relative told me to let her play dress up with it afterwards. I’ve never seen a dress get worn so often! I’m so glad I let her play in it, rather than save it and never use it again.
