Have you ever started an organizing project, then put it on the back burner and never picked it up again?
Ha! Yes, all the time. And this was one of the worst.
I started organizing my spices about two and a half years (and two babies!) ago. Fast forward to this month, when I asked my husband what he wanted for his birthday, and he told me he would love it if I would just finish organizing the spices.
Apparently he finally got tired of digging through the box of spices where I [temporarily- I thought!] put all the spices until I had a chance to go through them and hang them up on the magnetic spice rack that I enthusiastically purchased two years earlier.
Well… I finally did it. And I can’t believe it took me so long. It turned out to be a really easy project, and it looks great! It’s so easy to find spices we’re looking for now, and there is so much more room in our cabinets where they used to be crammed.
What do you think?

Here are the steps that I followed to set up this magnetic spice rack wall in our kitchen:
Step 1: Install a stainless steel base
You have to have somewhere to attach your magnetic spice containers. I thought about using the refrigerator, or the inside of a cabinet, but I ultimately decided to attach a thin metal piece to a wall next to an end cabinet. We had a little bit of space there, and I thought it would be a convenient spot.
I’ve seen a lot of people use the wall area right about their stove as well, which is smart, since that is where you’ll do most of your cooking. The first picture is the base that I used, but I’m also including a few similar packages that include a base when you buy the spice containers:

Step 2: Fill your magnetic spice containers
I just took all of the spices that we already had, and filled up the spice containers that I bought here.
Since I had a few extra spices, so I stashed the ones that I hardly ever use in a basket in our pantry. I figured they don’t need to be on display 24/7 when I only use them to make pumpkin bread once a year. 😉
Here are a few different magnetic spice rack options that I love. (The first one is the one that I used.) A lot of them come with their own labels, which is super handy.

3. Label your spice containers
If you bought a set that includes label stickers, you’re all set. I decided to try my hand at printable waterslide decal paper. That meant that I had to print a list of all my spice names on the decal paper, spray with clear acrylic spray multiple times, soak them in water for a few second to remove the backs, and attach the labels.
I’m not sure that it was worth all of that. If I had to do it again, I would probably look for a simpler option. But I do like the way the labels turned out.
They’re a little hard to see against the darker spices, but not so hard that you can’t find what you’re looking for. Overall, I’m pretty happy with the way they turned out.
4. Hang up your spice containers and start cooking!
I also attached a decal to the wall above the spice rack that reads, “Live life with a little spice!” (I can’t find the exact one I bought, but these are similar.)

It’s so easy to find what I’m looking for now, and more importantly, my husband is happy that I actually finished this project and can move on to something else. 😉
Hopefully you’ve gotten some ideas on how to organize your own spices. Have fun, and happy cooking!
