Morning sickness: The ultimate survival guide

“You’re pregnant? Congratulations- that’s so awesome! How have you been feeling?”

Do you get this question, too? The answer for me has been: Very, very grateful. And very, very sick!

Morning sickness is no fun. And it doesn’t just happen in the morning. (Sorry!) It can, however, vary from one pregnancy to the next, so if you’re having a tough time right now, hang in there, and don’t write off ever having babies again.

So mostly for myself, but also to help out my fellow pregnant mamas, I compiled a list of morning sickness remedies for us to try out:

Peppermint is another scent/flavor that is supposed to soothe a queasy stomach. Try peppermint candies, tea and gum. If you use essential oils, you might want to try a peppermint oil as well. Sometimes just brushing my teeth with minty toothpaste can help.

3. Lemon

The smell of lemon can sometimes help you feel better. Try cutting one up and leaving it out in a bowl to smell. Or add lemon slices to your water or tea. You can also try lemon drops or lemon essential oil.

4. Stay hydrated

It’s so important to drink lots of fluids, for both you and the baby. But what if you just can’t stomach the thought of drinking water? Try freezing a few gatorade ice cubes and sucking on them. You can also try taking small sips of Ginger Ale or Coke. I’ve been loving fruit juices lately.

5. Sea bands

An empty stomach will probably make your morning sickness worse, so try not to let yourself get too hungry, even if the thought of eating makes you feel sick. If you can’t eat a whole meal, eat small snacks as often as possible. (Click here to see my list of 60+ easy pregnancy snack ideas.) Also, keep a pack of crackers on your nightstand and try to eat a few right before bed and as soon as you get up in the morning.

7. Try different foods

Some foods might help you feel better if you snack on them, while others may make you feel worse. For example, it’s usually best to stay away from very greasy foods, which won’t help you feel better in the long run. Here are a few ideas to try:

  • Saltine crackers
  • Watermelon
  • Applesauce
  • Rice
  • Toast
  • Potatoes
  • Bananas
  • Almonds
  • Avocado
  • Any fresh fruit or veggies that you can tolerate
  • Cereal
  • Soup or broth

8. Avoid strong smells

Hamilton Beach 6-Quart Slow Cooker with... Hamilton Beach 6-Quart Slow Cooker with… $34.99Amazon Prime Buy on Amazon

Are there any smells that really make you feel terrible? Think creatively about how you can avoid those smells. If cooking dinner for your family makes you sick, maybe your husband can be in charge of dinner for the next few weeks. Or maybe it would work better for you to throw cold ingredients in the slow cooker each morning rather than standing over a stove in the late afternoon.

9. Make a morning sickness survival kit

If you have to leave the house, you might feel a little better knowing that you have a few essentials along with you:

  • Throw-up bags (sorry!)
  • A water bottle
  • Wipes
  • Travel toothbrush/toothpaste set
  • Mints or gum
  • Crackers

10. Figure out if your prenatal vitamin is making you sick

Try taking your vitamin at a different time of day. Or talk to your doctor about switching to a different type of vitamin.

11. Stay cool

Gaiatop USB Desk Fan, 3 Speeds Strong... Gaiatop USB Desk Fan, 3 Speeds Strong… $9.99Amazon Prime Buy on Amazon

A hot room or car might compound any feelings of nausea that you already have. Make sure to turn up that air conditioning, or use a small fan to keep the air circulating.

12. Get some rest

This one is tough, I know. You have a million things that you need to be doing. You’re possibly taking care of older children, preparing for a new baby, working, nesting, running your household, etc.

But now is the time to take it easy on yourself. Let the laundry wait. It’s ok if the house isn’t perfectly clean. Take a nap. Morning sickness won’t last forever, and you can get right back to work as soon as you’re feeling better. But for now, try to take care of yourself.

If all else fails…

  1. Talk to your doctor about other options that might help.
  2. Remember that all this sickness is worth it! Don’t forget that growing a baby is hard work, and in a few short months, you’ll be holding a tiny little baby in your arms. However hard today is, it will be worth it when you get to meet your precious baby. You’ve got this, mama. Good luck!
